The Olive Press

The Olive Press – Sonoma, California

The Olive Press is a hidden treasure found off the beaten path in beautiful Sonoma, California. Set amongst rolling hills of vineyards and olive trees, you will know when you reach this destination when you see a gorgeous brick building that houses both The Olive Press and Jacuzzi Family Vineyards.

A Treasure Trove of Liquid Gold

Upon entering the impressive old stone building, passing through big wooden doors with iron straps and bolts reminding us of an old treasure chest, your eyes will be filled with a trove of gourmet treasures that will make a foodie’s heart skip a beat.

The walls are artfully decorated with an array of bottles filled with California extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegars imported from Italy. The Olive Press bottles are labeled with brightly colored banners allowing you to easily distinguish the different varieties at a glance. However, if you are just beginning to learn about the flavor characteristics of the various olives, a full staff of friendly faces are eager to guide you through their impressive selection.

Certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil

the olive press review 4We are encouraged to start with the delicate Sevillano and taste our way through to the robust Italian Blend, adding a dash of balsamic vinegar along the way to get our creative juices flowing. Although The Olive Press was busy with people milling around, we were able to constantly interact with the knowledgable staff who were well educated on everything olive. Got a question? They have answers! Anything from technical questions about the milling process to recipe ideas, they’ve got you covered.

The Olive Press makes your tasting and shopping experience easy. Having been listed as one of the Top 10 Places to buy EVOO by The Olive Oil Times, a prestigious and respected media source in the olive oil industry, there will be no second guessing the quality found on their shelves. The majority of the olive oils you will find at The Olive Press are award winning, certified extra virgin by the California Olive Oil Council and/or certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers, and all bottles are labeled with a harvest date so you can be sure the oil you are buying is fresh off the press!

Artisan Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Not only does The Olive Press carry their award winning brand, but also the brands of local California growers (within a 150 mile radius) that they press and produce at their mill on site. These boutique brands are hard to find in local stores, so don’t miss the opportunity to taste the wonderful selection they carry on your visit. You will find a few of our favorites such as Grove 45 EVOO, Lunigiana Organic EVOO, Marquesa EVOO, and Jacuzzi Family EVOO, all robust varieties yet distinctly different. One of the reasons why we love The Olive Press is you can try them all before you buy!

Specialty Olive Oil

the olive press review 6Citrus Crushed – The Olive Press also has a selection of Citrus Crushed Olive Oils that are created by crushing the actual fruit with the olives during the milling process. This allows the real flavor of the fruit to shine through – no infusing with flavoring is practiced here. Blood Oranges, Clementines, Lemons, Limes, and Jalapeños are used to add an extra kick of flavor to your culinary creations.

Dipping – The Olive Press takes it one step further by offering infused dipping oils that can also be used as marinades. These oils have been infused with herbs and spices to inspire easy cooking ideas. Need a pasta dish in a hurry? Add a little Basil Parmesan Olive Oil! Want a great steak marinade? Try the Italian Herb Olive Oil! Your choices and ideas are endless.

Smoked – This is our favorite, hands down. Again, this is not an infusion of smoke flavoring. The producer of this oil, The Smoked Olive, actually “smokes” the olive oil to give it the unique flavor that stands behind it’s name. It’s outrageously delicious!

More Buried Treasure

the olive press review 7There’s more in store for you if you take the time to explore. Beautiful ceramic cruets are waiting to be filled with your favorite liquid gold. Experiment with a new cookbook or exotic spice. Bath and body soaps, lotions, and salves made with moisturizing olive oil are waiting to pamper your skin. Tuscan themed linens are waiting to adorn your table. Olive oil ice cream is waiting to be experienced. Go ahead and indulge a little!

Room with a View

The Olive Press houses the first actual olive press and mill in Sonoma that can be viewed right there, through a glass window. You can take a tour and get the details of the milling process, but there’s nothing quite like seeing the mill in action. Depending on the season, you may get lucky enough to get a glimpse of how the olives are pressed into a sumptuous golden oil.

“X” Marks the Spot

the olive press review 3The best view of all is when you step outside and take a stroll around the beautiful grounds of the property. If you are looking for something a little more intimate and truly special, The Olive Press can reserve a private tasting for you, set amongst the beautiful scenery that surrounds you. Want to perch under the shade of an umbrella in the Piazza? Or, do you wish to be seated in the Courtyard overlooking the vineyards? The Olive Press opens their big wooden doors to transport you to another world.

The Olive Press is a place to relax, unwind, learn, and enjoy the fruits of labor in Sonoma. Jacuzzi Family Wines is right next door, so sip on a glass of wine while you’re there. Take time to enjoy and treat yourself to a wonderful experience at a place where the hospitality is grand. With two locations, one in Sonoma and the other in Napa, you should definitely put The Olive Press on your map of places to visit. Great treasures await you!
