B.R. Cohn Organic California Extra Virgin Olive Oil
You will find B.R. Cohn Winery and Olive Oil Company as you are meandering down the Sonoma Highway in Glen Ellen, California. As you turn up the drive lined with olive trees and whimsical works of sculptured art, you will spot a classic white farm style house with a wraparound porch sitting on top of the hill. Backed by a big blue sky and shadowed by towering olive trees, you will be instantly drawn to step inside.
A Little Bit Country
Walking past the lofty olive trees that canopy the sidewalk, you hear their leaves rustling in the breeze. It is a quiet and peaceful place that makes you feel like you are in the countryside, so far removed from the busyness of the Napa and Sonoma Valley winery scene. As you approach the Gourmet Shop, a chair sits outside the front door inviting you to have a seat and stay awhile. A chalkboard sign hangs above the chair, advertising the Picholine Extra Virgin Olive Oil, letting you know that French sophistication awaits you inside this little country store. Kona, the winery dog, is our greeter as we step into the olive oil tasting room. With a rope in her mouth, she invites us in to play a friendly game of tug-of-war.
Step Back In Time
The owner of this beautiful estate, Bruce Cohn, was one of the first to pioneer the resurrection of olive oil production in Sonoma County. He purchased this property with 140 year old French Picholine Olive Trees and wanted to produce a high quality extra virgin olive oil from this unique fruit. Most olive groves in Sonoma have Spanish or Italian varietals, so B.R. Cohn already had something unique to offer. Picholine trees don’t produce high quantities of fruit, so small batches are made in limited amounts. Only available at B.R. Cohn Winery and Olive Oil Company, a bottle of Olive Hill Estate Picholine Extra Virgin Olive Oil is considered a specialty.
Over the years, the selection of B.R. Cohn extra virgin olive oils has grown to include several award winners such as the California EVOO, Organic EVOO, and the Unfiltered EVOO. Their distinctive black bottles give a description of each oil’s characteristics, like a fine wine, with serving suggestions to enjoy the oil to the fullest. Each bottle is also labeled with a mill date and a seal of certification from the California Olive Oil Council which guarantees that the olive oil is both fresh and extra virgin. The bottles also have a “Product of California” seal which makes a statement when giving B.R. Cohn EVOO as a gift, since California is the up and coming destination to buy some of the world’s best extra virgin olive oil.
B.R. Cohn’s selection of California Wine and Balsamic Vinegars are made using the Orleans Method. This process is similar to the way balsamic vinegars are made in Italy. Recognizing that this process cannot be rushed if you want to bring out the full flavor of the fruit, B.R. Cohn ages the grape must in Oak barrels for a minimum of 18 months to create a full flavored vinegar that is both sweet and tart. B.R. Cohn also has the traditional balsamic vinegars from Modena, Italy that have been aged from 15 to 25 years. Both styles of vinegars are beautifully bottled in frosted glass with B.R. Cohn’s lovely label of a colorful art deco, stained glass style olive branch – another great gift idea!
A Little Bit Rock-N-Roll
Bruce Cohn, owner of B.R Cohn Winery and Olive Oil Company, is also the long-time manager of The Doobie Brothers. If you take a stroll over to the winery next door, you will be taken back in time to witness rock-n-roll memorabilia from the band. Cool old photographs hang from the walls of the tasting room to share a little bit of their nostalgic history. However, if you’d like to “listen to the music” and experience The Doobie Brothers “live”, check out B.R. Cohn’s website for information on the Fall Music Festival and other upcoming concerts and events.
A Fun Place to Taste
B.R. Cohn Winery and Olive Oil Company is an unpretentious “kick back and relax” kind of place. While visiting Olive Hill Estate, grab a glass of wine, some tasty treats from the Gourmet Shop, head out to the patio to take in the stunning scenery, and enjoy a private tasting or a picnic. If you’re looking to add a little more fun to your day, B.R. Cohn always has something planned – classic car shows, wine & olive oil tasting dinners, and of course concerts! There is something for everyone to enjoy at B.R. Cohn, even if it’s a friendly game of tug-of-war with Kona.
